Filigree Textiles was the dream of Mr. Austin Baxter, the very first Basford Group Managing Director. He carefully selected a site in Geelong, Victoria and arranged for a purpose built factory to be constructed during the late 1980s. He also purchased the very latest in textile equipment directly from Europe at a cost of several million dollars. The company was officially opened in April 1990 by the then Victorian Premier, Mr. John Cain.
Filigree Textiles originally made a name as the makers and distributors of quality lace and sheer designs for the Australian, New Zealand, South Pacific and South-East Asian markets. As the company grew over the next few foundation years, Filigree evolved into a state of the art manufacturing plant integrating worlds best practice in designing, warping, knitting, dyeing/finishing and cut/make/trim. These processes were all performed in-house across three sites in Geelong, totaling approximately 80,000 square feet of floor space.
The company became 100% Australian owned in 1995 with a management buyout of the original British owners. This buyout included Wayne Leslie, the current Managing Director of Filigree Textiles.
Since its inception, Filigree has focused on providing high quality products, innovative designs and value for money for consumers. This philosophy is applied not only to their renowned laces but also to their ever expanding range of cut-length drapery fabrics, pre-packaged goods, blind fabrics, sheers and thermal coated products.
Filigree Textiles has a rigorous quality system in place to ensure the ongoing quality of their products. This includes a well equipped textile laboratory with testing capability for colour fastness to light, light penetration, washability, weight, construction & drapability to evaluate both current and potential products prior to purchase. External laboratories are regularly used for testing flammability and UV protection characteristics.
Incoming goods are inspected in accordance with Australian Standard AS1199-1988. In addition, Filigree has its own quality inspectors located in the major product origin countries to check goods prior to shipment.
Over the past few years, Filigree have invested heavily in warehousing, logistics and I.T improvement. The pursuit of “Best Practice” warehousing and distribution has led to approximately $1 million being invested in new equipment and technology during the past few year.
Filigree continues to embrace the ever changing market and is constantly evolving to pursue new challenges.
